A gourd you cannot mistake

Bitter melon, Momordica charantia, is a climbing vine in the gourd family, grown throughout the tropical and subtropical world. Its fruit is unmistakable: a long, tapering gourd with a warty, ridged skin, usually picked while still green.

The plant grows quickly on a trellis or fence, producing slender vines, yellow flowers, and the distinctive fruit that gives it its name. As the gourd ripens it turns orange and splits open, revealing seeds wrapped in a bright red coat.

The bitterness is the point

True to its name, bitter melon is genuinely, assertively bitter, and that bitterness is exactly why cooks reach for it. It is a prized vegetable across South and Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa, where it is stir-fried, stuffed, curried, and added to soups.

Various preparations soften the bitterness, from salting and blanching to pairing it with strong, rich ingredients. The fruit is a long-standing part of many culinary and herbal traditions across the regions where the vine grows, valued as much for its character as for its flavour.

Bitter melon extract in Veris

Veris includes 50 mg of bitter melon extract, taken from the fruit, per serving. Using an extract of the fruit gives a concentrated and consistent amount, rather than relying on the variable composition of a fresh or dried gourd.

The 50 mg is disclosed in full on the label. Nothing about the bitter melon contribution is hidden inside a blend, so its amount sits in plain view among the other actives.

How it sits in the formula

Bitter melon is one of the more concentrated botanicals in Veris, sitting just below juniper by weight. It brings a tropical food crop with a strong identity into a formula that already spans bark, leaf, and cone.

It is often discussed in the context of metabolic wellness and is a familiar part of many herbal traditions. We tell you what the plant is and how people cook it. We do not claim that the extract acts on anything in the body.
